Reporting Errors
There are several types of errors that creep into any
genealogical transcription, and our listings are no exception. If
you find an error, here is the procedure to deal with it:
First, be sure the error is on a GenPics.Org site!
GenPics.Org is a group of sites that list, in most cases,
census information (or in the case of Ireland, a census substitute: Griffith's
Valuation) -- then allow our visitors to add links to sites with
pictures or further information on those persons listed in the census. Be
sure you are not trying to report an error that occurs in a site we link
to -- we have no control over their content!
Decide if it is a BAD LINK, an error of FACT or TRANSCRIPTION error.
If a link does not work, try again later ... the target web
site might be temporarily down. If it does not work over a week or longer,
or if the the page it takes you to no longer contains the information we
originally linked-to (i.e. it is not pictures, genealogy, biography or history,
or it does not include the target person -- double check to make sure an alternate
spelling isn't being used!) then note the title of the link (such as:
"Descendants of Thomas Hyde"), and click on
the bad-link button that looks like this:
If a close reading of the original census shows it says
"John Sims" but it was transcribed as "John Lims" -- that
is a TRANSCRIPTION error, and we will correct the database to show the
actual spelling, if you provide a copy of the relevant original census image so
we can see and judge what is correct. We do not have the time to look up
census information based on page references or other information, you must
provide an actual copy-image for us to consider making a database change.
All other errors are errors of FACT. If the name was actually
"John Sims" and the census taker wrote "John Lims"
then we will not change it in the database, but you can mention the error on
the individual listing on the GenPics.Org site.
Report the error.
To report an error, go to the page showing the individual listing,
and click on the corrections button, which looks like this:
